Pregnancy can be amazing, but let's be realistic - it can also be very uncomfortable. As a midwife and founder of C-sectionUK, my clients often report a general feeling of discomfort and tell me they feel additional support would be helpful. We talk through options like supportive clothing and resting but sometimes one of the most effective solutions is to use a pregnancy support belt.
Now it’s important that we distinguish between pain and discomfort. Anything that resembles pain should be an immediate visit to your midwife who may refer you to a physiotherapist. However, if it’s general bump support you need, then Momcozy has an answer to this in their Ergonest Maternity Belly Band. I’ve been working with Momcozy on this product and I’ve written a little summary below about how it can help you and your growing bump.

What a Pregnancy Support Belt Does
A support band (also called a pregnancy support maternity belt or belly band) wraps around your growing belly, offering external support. Its primary benefits include:
- Reducing load on the lower back and pelvis- As the baby and uterus grow, your centre of gravity shifts, placing more demand on your lumbar spine, pelvis, and abdominal wall. A good band lifts and supports some of that weight.
- Minimising abdominal strain- Tension in the front (abdominal area) can pull on the ligaments and connective tissues, causing discomfort; support helps counter this.
- Improving posture- Pregnancy belts can remind (and help) you to maintain a more stable posture, preventing slouching or undue strain.
- Easing day-to-day movement- Standing, walking, and even sitting can become more comfortable when support is distributed and some of the load is taken off muscles that are already tired.
- Potential relief for pelvic pain, round ligament pain, or even mild lower back pain- While a support band doesn’t treat underlying pathology, it can often make the day more bearable. If you suspect any pelvic pain, PGP, or abdominal pain, your first step should always be to seek support from your midwife, and if you and your baby are otherwise well, getting a referral to a physiotherapist.

- It combines advanced O-shape 3D molding with a patented Ergonest Support Structure, designed to reduce pressure on both the belly and the lower back.
- Its two piece design helps distribute the weight of the abdomen more evenly and reduce concentrated pressure points.
- It’s made of soft, breathable, skin-friendly materials that are adjustable so that comfort can be tailored as your bump grows.
I actually really love the breathability of the Momcozy fabrics across their whole product range. It's the one thing I go on about most!
Awards & Recognition
The Momcozy Ergonest Belly Band has already picked up significant recognition:
- Most notably, it was awarded the Kind + Jugend Innovation Award 2025.. Kind + Jugend is one of the world’s leading trade fairs for mother-and-baby products, and its Innovation Award is given to products that demonstrate exceptional functionality, safety, design, and improvement to the lives of parents and babies.
- I think it really reflects the amazing design elements of this product, but most importantly the fact that it’s working for women and the issues they face when carrying a heavy bump.

Practical Tips on Using a Support Belt Safely & Effectively
Here are some things I often recommend to women when considering and using a belly band:
- Start when you need it- Many find it helpful during the second trimester, when the bump starts getting heavier. But use it only as needed; you shouldn’t be wearing it constantly or experiencing issues constantly - if you do, you should be speaking to your midwife. Again, any actual pain, should always be your prompt to speak to your midwife as well.
- Fit matters- The band should be snug enough to give support but not so tight that it causes discomfort, impairs circulation, or makes breathing harder.
- Wear for limited periods- Particularly during more strenuous activity or when standing for a long time. It can offer relief, but make sure you also allow your body to rest without the band so your muscles don’t get too reliant.
- Check posture and activity— The band helps, but good posture, supportive footwear, and mindful movement are also important. Again, physios are worth their weight in gold.
When a Support Belt Alone Isn’t Enough for Pregnant Women
While bands are great comfort aids, they are just that - comfort measures. If you experience:
- Persistent or worsening pain(especially in the pelvis, hips, or lower back)
- Sharp or radiating pain
- Pain that affects your mobility, sleep, or daily functioning
then you shouldn’t rely solely on a band.
In such cases, seeing a women’s health physiotherapist is important, BUT you should always check with your midwife or Dr first. Pain can sometimes be serious and any concerns or complications should always be ruled out first. If you do get referred to a physiotherapist trained in pregnancy and pelvic health they can:
- Assess whether there are musculoskeletal issues needing hands-on work (manipulation, mobilisation).
- Prescribe the correct type of support/or bandsuited exactly to your anatomy and symptoms.
- Teach you exercises and movement strategies to reduce strain and address the root of the problem.

My View: Comfort Measures & Limitations
From my experience as a midwife, a support belt like the Momcozy Ergonest can be transformative in terms of easing day-to-day discomfort. Many women say it helps them feel more “supported” in their body: less jarring movement in walks, standing, or bending. It doesn’t fix everything - but it gives a tool, something physically tangible, to help manage changes that are often unavoidable.
That said, there are limitations:
- It doesn’t replace core muscle strength, posture work, or professional assessment.
- It may not help with severe conditions (SPD -symphysis pubis dysfunction; pelvic girdle pain; or other structural issues) except temporarily.
- If ill-fitting, used incorrectly, or overused, it may even cause other discomfort (e.g, over-compression, skin irritation, or pressure where not wanted). So make sure to follow the guidance that comes with it!
Summary & Recommendations
- If you’re pregnant and beginning to feel strain on your back, pelvis, or abdomen, consider trying a pregnancy support belt as part of your comfort strategy.
- The Momcozy Ergonest Belly Band is a strong option: it offers a modern design, breathable materials, and dual support, and has been formally recognised with an international award (Kind + Jugend Innovation Award 2025).
- Use a band moderately, ensure proper fit, and combine it with good posture, rest, and safe movement.
- But importantly: if you have pain—especially persistent, sharp, or affecting daily life—seek help from a women’s health physiotherapist. They might use manipulation or mobilisation as well as prescribe a tailored support band.
