How to Use a Baby Carrier Safely: The Ultimate DOs & DON'Ts Guide for Beginners

A baby carrier is a great way to keep your child close to you while giving yourself free hands. But safety and the right way to place newborns are the most important things. This is the best guide you'll ever find for safely and easily using a carrier. You'll be a "babywearing pro" in no time!

The Baby Carrier Don’ts

For your baby's health and safety, never do the following when using your carrier:

  • Do Not Cover the Face or Head: Do not cover your baby’s head or face with any material while they are in the baby carrier. Do not cover the back or top of your baby’s head with the body panel.
  • Avoid Cradle Position: Do not feed the baby in a cradle position inside the carrier. Do not allow the baby to sleep in the nursing position.
  • Avoid Outward Facing: Do not wear your baby facing out in this carrier.
  • Check Fit and Security: Do not wear your baby too low or with loose straps. Do not overtighten the carrier panel when removing slack. Do not overtighten the waistband on yourself.
  • Mind the Legs: Do not overextend their legs. Do not let their legs dangle below their bottom.
  • Check the Weight: Do not wear a baby under 7 lbs in this carrier.
  • Inspect Gear: Do not use the carrier if parts are broken or missing.
  • Waistband Style: Do not wear the waist waterfall style or roll the waistband.
  • Strap Style: Do not wear the straps backpack style.

The Baby Carrier Do’s

Always follow these guidelines for a secure, comfortable, and supportive fit:

1. Positioning for Safety (T.I.C.K.S. Check)

  • Keep Face Visible: Make sure you can always easily see their entire face clearly.
  • The "Kiss Test": Wear them high and snug. The top of their head should be close enough that you can easily kiss it without straining. The carrier should be worn high on your natural waist.
  • Inward Facing: Wear them facing in towards your body.
  • Panel Placement: Make sure the top of the panel sits at the nape of the neck, no higher than the bottom of the earlobe, and no lower than the top of the shoulder.
  • Check Fit: Assess your baby for goodness of fit and safety once they reach 7 pounds to determine if they are ready for this carrier.
  • Inspect Gear: Check the carrier for damage, use the safety loop, and make sure all of the buckles “click” into place.

2. Achieving the Healthy Hip "M Position"

Achieving the M-Position (where the knees are higher than the bottom) is the most critical step for your baby's development.

  • Support the Thighs: Provide full support of the bottom and thighs with the seat.
  • Proper Seat Depth: Position the seat so it provides support only to the bend of each knee, not past. (This prevents overextending the legs).
  • Tighten Smartly: Remove slack from the shoulders and feed it down to the buckle to tighten.

3. Wearing and Nursing Tips

  • Waist Style: Wear the waist apron style.
  • Strap Style: Wear the straps cross-style.
  • Nursing Position: Feed the baby in an upright koala position, and always keep one hand on them while feeding.
  • Post-Feed Adjustment: Always bring the baby back into the high and tight position when they are done actively feeding, or if they get drowsy while feeding.
  • Waistband Tension: Tighten the waist so that it feels supportive and snug without adding pressure or tension to your body.
